TX8M Linux Development Kit Quickstart guide

This guide will help new users to quickly setup our TX8M Linux Development Kit.

Detailed information about the TX8M module itself are available on our website.

Unboxing

When opening the package of the Development Kit you should find the following components inside:

  1. Our catalog and the TX8M datasheet.

  1. The 10.1” capacitive touch display with 1280x800 resolution.

  1. A micro USB cable for programming.

  1. A small plastic bag with cables for connecting the display and its touchscreen.
  2. A TTL to USB cable.

  1. The development board with the TX8M module already plugged into it.
  2. An AC / DC 12V wall adapter power supply.
  3. A display stand.

Assembling and connecting

Assemble and connect the board to the image as shown in the following pictures. This means:

  1. Connect the display powering between board power outlet and displays power input.
  2. Connect the touchscreen to USB cable between the displays port and the USB-host port of the board.
  3. Carefully connect the display signal cable.
  4. Place the display on the stand and place the board in front of it.
  5. As the last step connect the 12V DC power and plug the AC adapter into your powerline.

Warning

Please be careful, it’s highly recommended to disconnect the 12V power before (un)plugging the module or other cables.

Booting, First steps

After connecting the 12V power your Development Kit will boot Debian Stretch desktop - ready to use.

You can login with user root and password root.

You can connect a network cable and start Firefox. If you want to enter something via touchscreen open “Onboard”, the on-screen keyboard displayed at the login.

PuTTY Terminal Connection

This section shows you how to connect your Development Kit with a host computer to login to a terminal.

You will need a host computer with a terminal program, e.g. PuTTY, to open a terminal connection to your Development Kit.

The following example is for a Windows 10 host system.

  1. Power on the board.
  2. Use the TTL to USB cable to connect your computer with the board via 1. UART. The black wire goes to “GND”-Pin.

  1. Check the Device Manager to see as which COM the USB connected.
  2. For example, it would come up as COM9, configure PuTTY as follows:

  1. Hit “Open” and you should get terminal access to your board. Sometimes you have to hit the [Enter] key before you get an output. Here you also can login with root:root.

Hint

If your computer is not recognizing the TTL to USB cable you might try installing this driver: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM21228_Setup.zip

Play a video

This is a short example for you to get in contact with Debian.

  1. Install VLC player with apt:
apt install vlc
  1. Allow VLC to be run as root:
sed -i 's/geteuid/getppid/' /usr/bin/vlc
  1. Set the display for VLC:
export DISPLAY=:0
  1. Play our video:

(Re)Installing the OS

This section is for reinstalling Debian Stretch or using another version of Debian Stretch.

We recommend to use the Debian Stretch desktop environment.

It might help you to understand how things work, when installing Debian via the Net-installer by yourself.
